The material which is used is Polymethylmethacrylat (PMMA).
This element offers greater advantages. Its biocompatibility for this specific use, surpassed the advantages of the use of glass, which has been widely used. Due to its light weigth and its compact structure, the PMMA prosthesis becomes an unbreakable element.
The PMMA is so mouldable that ocassional modifications can be made if fixing is necessary. Its brightness, by way of polishing, is as similar as the coat of tears on a ordinary eye.
It can be understood that not long ago specialists only dealt with stock or Standard prosthesis.
In fact, there were few specialists and the solution to come closer to the patient was making pieces of different sizes and show them in shops, such as chemist´s shops.
Although these prosthesis fulfilled a necessity, they were no solution. They also caused damage to the tissues and irreversible deformations in the eye socket apart from generating eye mucosa because of the fact that the prosthesis did not fit well in the eye socket. Nowadays, it can be said that tailor-made prosthesis have taken over the stock ones. The greatest ocularist experts have trained people capable of doing an excellent job.
Eventhough each ocularist take his own time for fitting the prosthesis, both the close and personal contact and the follow-up to the patient are both basic principles to point out the diffence with the Standard prosthesis.
