The fitting process of a tailored-made prosthesis takes aproximately 4 or 5 visits to the specialist surgery.
The state of the eye socket will determine the election of the proper techniques to be carried out by the specialist.
The diameter of both the iris and the pupil will be measured and from a wide scale of whites, the colour of the sclera(the white of the eye) will be determined.
Then, the process will go on to the colouration of the iris, drawing near to the colour we are looking for. There are three techniques which are carried out:
The Empiric technique by which a prosthesis to be tested is selected on the proffessional experience.
This prosthesis goes through different changes by means of aggregating or polishing. The aggregates are made with a pink-coloured wax.

The Impression technique by which An impression of the shape of the space in the eye socket is made with alginate.
Once alginate is poured inside, it solidifies, reaching a consistency similar to gelatine.
This mold constitutes a pattern for the back face of the artificial eye and its volume.
At last, the combination technique, which is a combination of both the impresion and the empiric techniques.
On the first appointment, a decision is made on the technique to be used for the good of the eye mobility. This mobility is connected to the muscles that control the movement of the eyeball and are still linked to it. For that reason, in case of an enucleation of the eye it is hard to attain the best mobility, nevertheless, we try to make the most of the slight movements originating from the back of the eye socket.
