All of a sudden everything came down…March 4th  2002. I’ve just arrived from the doctor, together with María, my wife. Listening that there was no other alternative but removing my eye was like ripping off part of my heart.
Fear and a burden overcame me. The only thing that kept me focused was grabbing María’s hand. The doctor offered support by telling me that there were excellent prostheses that will replace my eye. It was inevitable that my eye be removed since it hurt a lot. The diagnosis was melanoma.
Apart  from the physical pain, there was a deeper feeling; that of saying good bye to a part of my body. When I looked at myself in the mirror to shave, I wanted to believe it wasn’t me , it was just a dream.
Not only Maria but also my children shared the pain, the one that is not seen, the one that is reflected in the silence of the words. I knew they suffered next to me.
The day of the operation came and all of a them were waiting outside the operating room, as if they wanted to hug me. Fortunately everything turned out well. The doctor told me they had placed a “little ball” in the socket so as to fill in the missing part. He also told me about specialists who adapt eye prostheses called eye piece specialists.
Five weeks went by and I visited the specialist who explained to me what the process was about and started to work.
This story has the purpose of coming closer to those who may undergo this experience. I’m more than glad with the job they did on me; to the extent that people who didn’t know me before, don’t realize I have an eye piece. What’s more a neighbour who knew what had happened to me asked me if I had recovered my eye and could see well.

After six months with my prosthesis, and on de basis of the routine discomfort involved the loss of the eye, the introduction of myself has been of great help, as usually goes unnoticed and no I carry seven. The only objection I would point out is the time to do their cleaning, because I generated a small sensation repellent. However I'm very happy with the operation and adaptation of the prosthesis. Also recommend to any patient who suffers an infection or something similar to what I had, to decide to adapt.
